Ripped CV boot means a whole new axle...??!!

So, I've been having a blast with my local Dodge dealer service dept. About a month ago, I take her in to replace the rear axle seals. Work gets done and I shell out $400+ for the job.

Less than a month later, I have the leak again, so I take her back. The advisor calls me back and states that Mopar does not warrant seals and gaskets but their going to help me as a dealer call. HOWEVER, my CV boot is now ripped, grease everywhere and the tech states to replace the whole axle and boot assembly. This is a $700 job. WTF!!!

I tell the guy, so as a "favor", they're going to back up a $400+ job that in theory, I'd be paying for again that was completed less than a month ago. But now, I have a ripped boot on the same axle that your tech serviced less than a month ago?! This whole thing STINKS! He agreed...

Needless to say, I ran it up to the manager and thankfully, they are replacing all items on their dime. But, the part is on backorder until who knows when.

Being that this car is my mistress, can anything potentially get damaged while I wait for the part? They assure me not to worry but at this point, these guys are not high on my trust list. In addition, why do they have to replace the axle and boot? In my past, you have a ripped boot, you replace the boot...

I think i have the same thing... just a linear rip, so i was thinking, fill with grease and duct tape til i get it replaced? Lol
Not what u shud do i was just thinking it may be a temp fix.

I went for 2 years on a ripped boot in my subaru without adding any additional grease. And never had an issue lol. 2 NJ winters, etc but the dealer was calling for the same thing you are stating. I just kinda forgot about it to be honest. And despite them telling me I could literally kill the car blah blah blah, NOTHING ever happened.

Just my experience with this not saying you should follow my lead at ALL but just saying you should be fine for a week or two

If the axle is going to be replaced soon, then yeah you can drive it around... Just know that if the axle snaps, then you're going to be stuck. I've driven cars with ripped boots where the grease was leaking out and the axle didn't break for a very long time. Just take it easy on your car. No hard take offs, no harsh accelerations, etc. Drive like a normal human being, and the axle should last until the new one comes into the dealer.

Which side of the diff is leaking gear lube? If it is the passenger side, the issue may only be the overflow vent on top of the diff. Many techs incorrectly diagnosed leaky seals when the fluid was actually coming from the vent above the seal. It sounds like you may have this situation since it wasn't solved by replacing the seals. There is a TSB for this issue because it was a common problem.

I think the TSB was actually for Jeep differential vents having the same problem. I believe there is an updated vent that has a foam screen in it to keep the gear lube from misting out. Also make sure the diff is not overfilled.
